Fall is here, which means it’s time to think about what you will be doing with your boat during the off-season. If this is your first winter owning a boat or your first time living somewhere that experiences cold winters, you may be wondering about the winterization process. What’s involved? Do I have to winterize? What are the risks if I don’t? We’re here to help answer all of your questions! In this blog, we’ll cover all the basics of boat winterization!

What are the risks of skipping winterization?

Cracked Engines

When remnant water in the engine freezes, it expands with massive force and easily cracks engine blocks or manifolds.

Rust and Corrosion

Standing water and trapped moisture cause metal parts and electrical connections to rust.

Fuel Breakdown

Old gas turns gummy and fouls fuel lines or carburetors if a stabilizer has not been added.

Interior Damage

Mold, mildew, and freezing conditions can easily ruin seats, vinyl, and interior electronics.

What are the main steps of winterization?

Drain and Protect

Drain all water from the engine, live wells, and plumbing, then pump non-toxic antifreeze through the systems.

Fuel Treatment

Add a fuel stabilizer to a full tank and run the engine to coat the fuel system.

Oil Change

Change the engine oil to remove corrosive acids and old moisture before storage.

Battery Care

Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place so it does not freeze or die.

Cover Securely

Use a tight cover or shrink-wrap to block out snow, ice, and debris.

Do I have to winterize if I live in Ohio?

While there are no rules requiring you to winterize your boat, temperatures often drop below freezing during the winter in Ohio, which is why winterization is highly recommended by both boat professionals and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Winterizing a boat and motor is the most important maintenance a boat owner can perform to help ensure safe boating next spring. Whether you choose to do it yourself or have your marina or storage facility do it for you, winterizing is the best way to prepare your boat for the season to come.
